Hyginus Rille
Observation not yet recorded. This is a placeholder for future observations.
Object Type: Lunar Rille System
Size: 220 km length
Feature Information
The Hyginus Rille is a fascinating linear feature in Mare Vaporum, notable for the crater Hyginus at its center and the unique chain of rimless craterlets along its length. This rille is thought to be volcanic in origin, possibly formed by collapse along a subsurface lava tube.
What to Look For
- Linear rille crossing Mare Vaporum
- Crater Hyginus at the rille’s midpoint (11 km diameter)
- Chain of small rimless craters along the rille
- Connection to smaller secondary rilles
- Sharp definition under optimal lighting
- Contrast between rille floor and surrounding mare
Observing Notes
- Best phase: 6-8 days after new moon (optimal lighting angle)
- Coordinates: 7.8°N, 6.3°E
- Recommended magnification: 150-250x minimum
- Challenge: This is a Lunar II feature - requires excellent seeing
- Difficulty: Moderate to challenging
- Look for the transition from rille to crater chain
- The rimless craterlets suggest volcanic rather than impact origin
Historical Note
Hyginus Rille was one of the features studied during planning for the Apollo missions and remains a subject of interest for understanding lunar volcanism.
